How to do wazu

The ablution before namaz, step by step

Step 1

Intend it, and begin with the name of Allah

بِسْمِ اللهِ

How to say it

Bismillah

What it means

In the name of Allah.

The intention is in the heart. It does not have to be said aloud.
Step 2

Wash both hands to the wrists, three times
Step 3

Rinse the mouth, three times
Step 4

Draw water into the nose and blow it out, three times
Step 5

Wash the face, three times

From the hairline to below the chin, and from ear to ear.
Step 6

Wash the right arm to the elbow, then the left, three times each
Step 7

Wipe the head once with wet hands
Step 8

Wipe the ears once, inside and behind
Step 9

Wash the right foot to the ankle, then the left, three times each
Step 10

Read this when the wazu is finished

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

How to say it

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh.

What it means

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, who has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.
